Female Choir KYN, established in 1981, has always made music with ambition, passion and a creative angle. It has always had its own recognizable and intriguing identity, today more than ever.

KYN’s musical strength lies in its expressiveness, rhythmic competence and unique repertoire. KYN has profiled itself particularly as an interpreter of ethnic jazz. In ethnic jazz, elements of folk music, traditional texts and means of interpretation or modern poetry fuse with the rhythm and harmony of jazz. KYN has worked to establish this genre by commissioning pieces and arrangements from frontline Finnish composers. By doing so, it has purposefully aimed at enriching and developing the choir scene.

KYN has played a pioneering role in Finland in combining choir with a jazz band and cooperating with professional (jazz) musicians. It has also experimented with the idea of using instruments in a non-accompanying role: on some occasions the choir is a part of a jazz band, one of its instruments sometimes playing solos, sometimes accompanying other instruments, in other occasions the instruments join the choir as one of its voices.

KYN constantly challenges itself in all aspects of musical expression: rhythm, harmony, and interpretation of text. By stressing the interplay of these elements, KYN strives for creating experiences that touch the listener on an emotional level. It is the intensity of expression and delicacy of interpretation that lie at the core of KYN’s musical identity.

Recently, the choir’s fresh repertoire and way of doing music have attained increasing international interest and fascinated audiences around the world. KYN has performed at international choir festivals like Polyfollia in France (2012), Tampere Vocal Music Festival in Finland (2013), Taipei International Choral Festival in Taiwan (2013), Vaasa International Choir Festival (2014), and World Choir Games in Latvia (2014), VocalEspoo festival (2016) and Grand Prix of Nations competition in Germany (2017). KYN has also succeeded in international choir competitions and reviews. The latest accomplishment is from February 2017 in Grand Prix of Nations competition in Germany where KYN won the Grand Prix in category Mixed, Female and Male Choirs, came second in category Folklore and received a special prize for outstanding stage performance. Consequently, KYN was ranked number 6 in INTERKULTURs list of female choirs. KYN has published eight albums, of which “Jos minä puhuisin sinulle” [If I Spoke to You] (2016), is the latest one.

KYN has been conducted by its current artistic director Kaija Viitasalo since 1989. Viitasalo is a Master of Music from The Sibelius Academy. She is employed as a music teacher for intermediate and upper secondary classes in Viikki Teacher Training School of Helsinki University. Her work as KYN’s conductor has been recognized with special prizes in Tampere Vocal Music Festival Chorus Review 2011 (the special prize for the best stage performance) and invitational Klemetti competition for female choirs and ensembles 2002 (prize of the Finnish Broadcasting Company). In 2015, the President of the Republic of Finland conferred on Kaija Viitasalo the prestigious title ‘musiikkineuvos’ for her accomplishments as music educator and choral conductor.
